Lawyer Wilfredo Garrido asked the Supreme Court why it was “sitting” on a disbarment case filed against Vice President Sara Duterte in 2011 for punching a sheriff who was trying to execute a court order to demolish structures on a contested property.

Garrido also wondered why the court has apparently not asked Duterte to explain her allegation that former Speaker Martin Romualdez bribed Supreme Court Justices.

Duterte made the statement during a 2024 press conference where she also criticized the President and said she told somebody to kill him if she were killed.

Garrido said letting Duterte get away with her actions and words only fuels the belief that she is above the law.

He added that this could also erode confidence in the justice system.

“This inaction feeds Sara’s sense of impunity and self-entitlement. God help the Philippines if ever she gets elected president believing she is above the law. And, yes, this attitude feeds distrust in the justice system,” he said.

Garrido made the statements on Facebook, saying he was testing the Supreme Court’s statement that it welcomes “fair criticism.”
