Lawyer Israelito Torreon urged supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte to continue praying for his return, saying the possibility of the former president going home is becoming stronger amid reported moves by the United States to impose sweeping sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC).

In a statement, Torreon called on Duterte supporters to “storm the heaven” with prayers as the ICC faces possible sanctions from the US administration.

> “Alhamdullilah! Let us continue to storm the heaven with prayers and duas because the probability that Tatay Digong is going home is getting stronger everyday,” Torreon said.

His statements came after reports that the US administration is preparing broader sanctions against the ICC as an institution, in addition to measures previously imposed on individual court officials.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reportedly said the administration would seek to dismantle the ICC, while US President Donald Trump has urged member states to withdraw from the tribunal.

Duterte is currently in ICC custody in The Hague where he faces proceedings over alleged crimes against humanity linked to killings during his administration’s anti-drug campaign.

Reports on the possible sanctions have raised questions about the impact of restrictions on the ICC’s ability to continue its proceedings and maintain custody of detainees.#
