Te cites Constitution as President appoints new Speaker

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday announced that Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco will share the speakership term at the House of Representatives.

But for former presidential spokesperson Theodore Te, such action from the President doesn’t seem constitutional at all.

Citing Article VI sec. 16(1) of the 1987 Constitution, the abogado quipped on Twitter: “The Senate shall elect its President and the House of Representatives its Speaker, by a majority vote of all its respective Members.”

This, for him, is what #TheDocumentYouAllSworeToUpholdAndDefend mandates.
