Sol Taule recalls fight alongside Mary Jane’s parents to secure her freedom

Karapatan deputy secretary general Sol Taule said it is surreal to see how far she and Mary Jane Veloso’s parents have come in their fight to free her from detention.

Taule shared photos of her with Veloso’s parents Celia and Cesar in 2015 when they held a rally in front of the Indonesian Embassy to call for a reprieve for Veloso, who was then set to be executed.

Veloso got a reprieve from death row after the Philippine government said her testimony was needed against her alleged human traffickers. In 2024, she was repatriated following negotiations with Indonesia and detained at the Correctional Institution for Women.

On Saturday, she was freed from detention after being granted absolute pardon by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Taule joined Veloso and her parents as they celebrated Veloso’s freedom.

“Surreal that we’ve come this far through our collective effort and struggle. Malaya na si Mary Jane!” she said.
