Sinuka ng UP! Diliman chancellor, deans block Roque’s nomination to int’l law body
Harry Roque’s alma mater has turned its back on him.
In a rare and strongly-worded statement of condemnation, members of the University of the Philippines Diliman’s executive committee joined mounting opposition against the Presidential spokesman getting a seat at the prestigious International Law Commission.
The committee, which is led by Chancellor Fidel Nemenzo and composed of college deans and unit directors, came out with a joint statement on Tuesday calling against Roque’s selection to the body affiliated with the United Nations.
“Atty. Roque has a very poor track record of promoting, defending, and fulfilling human rights and the rule of law, especially during the administration of President Rodrigo R. Duterte in which he serves as a cabinet member. Therefore, his inclusion in the Commission would not serve its purposes but instead diminish the reputation of the body,” the statement read.
Roque was a human rights lawyer and professor at the UP College of Law, where he also pursued his juris doctor, prior to becoming the mouthpiece of Malacañang. He is currently in New York to personally lobby for his candidacy despite wide lockdowns and a raging local COVID-19 outbreak.
