SC’s “twins” vie for CJ post, JBC receives their acceptance
The Judicial and Bar Council has received on separate occasions the conforme or formal acceptance of Supreme Court Associate Justices Diosdado Peralta and Lucas Bersamin of their automatic nominations for the post chief justice.
The highest court seat in the country became vacant following the retirement of Teresira Leonardo-de Castro just recently.
Christened “twins” in the SC, Peralta and Bersamin have illustrious legal careers as they rose from the ranks before they were appointed to the high bench by former president and now Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Peralta was the former presiding justice of the Sandiganbayan and member of the special division that convicted ousted president Joseph Estrada of plunder in 2007.
He was dubbed the “hanging judge” of the
Quezon City regional trial court as he sent at least 40 convicts to the gallows from 1994 to 2002.
On the other hand, Bersamin was a Court of Appeals justice before his appointment to the SC 2009. He too was a judge in the Quezon City RTC.
