SC upholds libel conviction of Ang Dating Daan leader Eliseo ‘Brother Eli’ Soriano
The Supreme Court (SC) upheld the libel conviction of Ang Dating Daan leader Eliseo “Brother Eli” Soriano over his defamatory remarks against a fellow preacher some 20 years ago.
In a decision, the SC affirmed the May 2016 decision of the Court of Appeals upholding his conviction by an Iriga City court in the libel case filed by Jesus Miracle Crusade International Ministry (JMCIM) head Wilde Almeda.
The SC junked Soriano’s petition seeking the reversal of the rulings of the CA and RTC for lack of merit.
The high court sustained the findings of the lower courts that the elements of libel as provided under Article 353 of the Revised Penal Code were present when Soriano attacked Almeda in his program over dzAL in Iriga City on July 31, 1998.
In his radio program, Soriano criticised Almeda when he gave his blessing to then presidential candidate Jose de Venecia.
Soriano said Almeda was a “false prophet,” “idiot” and “apostle of demons.”
