SC scolds lawyer for berating opposing counsel inside courtroom
The Supreme Court (SC) has reprimanded abogado Teodoro Sta. Ana for berating the opposing counsel in front of other lawyers and accusing her of asking for a reset of their case in bad faith.
In a recent 5-page notice of resolution, the SC 1st Division found Sta. Ana guilty of violating Rule 8.01, Canon 8 of the Code of Professional Responsibility.
The case arose from lawyer Girlie Dimaculangan’s complaint that Sta. Ana on November 14, 2016, confronted her inside the courtroom of the Metropolitan Trial Court (MeTC) Branch 19.
Sta. Ana supposedly accused her of asking for a resetting of the case but then showing up on the previously-set date, as if to try to get his camp not to show up so she could deem him to have waived his client’s right to cross-examination.
“Sta. Ana could have privately aired his exasperation with Dimaculangan… Sta. Ana let his ’emotional attitude’ get the better of him. To Our mind, such unprofessional behavior must be reproached,” read the notice.
