SC confirms RTC’s receipt of PNP request for list of lawyers representing militants
The Supreme Court confirmed over the weekend that the Calbayog City police recently requested a provincial court for a list of lawyers representing militant groups and dissidents.
“Yes, the Office of the Clerk of Court of the RTC Calbayog confirmed receipt of the letter request. However, no action has been taken on the request,” SC Public Information Chief and concurrent spokesperson Brian Keith Hosaka said, relaying the message of the Calbayog clerk of court.
The Calbayog City police has requested the Calbayog regional trial court for a list of lawyers representing members of the communist party.
In a one-page letter, the Calbayog police said they are making a request in “compliance from higher PNP offices regarding lawyers who represent Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) personalities in Court.”
Last March 4, a human rights lawyer was stabbed by two unidentified assailants along Gen. Luna Street in Iloilo City.
Police identified him as National Union of People’s Lawyers-Panay secretary general Angelo Karlo Guillen.
Witnesses disclosed that face-masked wearing men stabbed Guillen in the head and back with a screw driver at 9:15 pm. The suspects fled after the incident.
Guillen is handling a number of political cases, including the case of Tumandok killings of indigenous people.
Furthermore, Guillen is also a co-counsel of one of the petitioners in suits challenging the constitutionality of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 before the Supreme Court.
