Sara Duterte, Pacquiao not qualified to run under 1Sambayan banner – Carpio
Davao City Mayor Sara “Inday” Duterte, boxer-turned-politician Sen. Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, and all other enablers of despotism are not qualified to run for public office under the 1Sambayan ticket for the 2022 national elections, former Supreme Court associate justice Antonio Carpio said on Thursday.
“We are a coalition of democratic forces, we reject those who are identified with authoritarianism. We reject those who are responsible for extra-judicial killings or those who abet extra-judicial killings.”
” (President) Duterte is the exponent of authoritarianism. He has several times said that he will trash the Constitution.. We do not think that the daughter of the President will qualify under our coalition,” Carpio, one of the convenors of 1Sambayan, said.
When asked if Pacquiao be considered by the newly-former coalition, Carpio said:” He is identified also with President Duterte. He has supported the war on drugs and he has stated that in the Senate. He is also for death penalty although he quotes the Bible. So, It will be difficult for us to consider him,” Carpio said.
1Sambayan, a broad coalition of pro-democracy groups and personalities intending to field a unified opposition slate for the 2022 national elections – for president, vice president, and 12 senators – has been launched on Thursday, March 18 2021.
Carpio and former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, and former Foreign Affairs secretary Albert del Rosario led the launching of 1Sambayan.
The election slate of 1Sambayan will challenge head-on the candidates that President Duterte will annoint.
Carpio noted that Sen. Grace S. Poe-Llamanzares and former Interior and Local Government secretary Mar A. Roxas II lost to Mr. Duterte in the 2016 presidential elections after the votes got divided.
According to the former senior SC magistrate, 1Sambayan would become a party of democratic forces and would oppose those “identified with authoritarianism, dictatorship, extrajudicial killings, plunder and violation of human rights.”
Carpio said the coalition is considering Vice President Maria Leonor G. Robredo, and Senators Maria Lourdes S. Binay-Angeles, and Ms. Poe-Llamanzares as its candidates.
