Roque vows Echanis kid won’t be another Baby River Nasino
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Malacañang will not let another child of a political detainee die in the hands of the state, following the arrest of another activist mother.
Human rights groups have cried foul over the arrest of Amanda Echanis, daughter of slain activist leader Randy Echanis, in Cagayan for the same reason of allegedly carrying firearms and explosives.
The same case was filed against young activist Reina Mae Nasino, who was separated from her baby while she remains in prison. Baby River, then three months old, died in the absence of her mother’s care.
The young Echanis arrested this week also had her one-month old kid with her when the arrest happened.
“Sana po ay hindi na maulit iyan,” Roque said during his Thursday briefing, passing on the responsibility to another agency.
“I am calling upon the DSWD to take steps to ensure that the welfare of the child will be protected,” he added. “Hindi po kasi dahilan iyon na palibhasa may anak ka, hindi ka makukulong at hindi ka masa-subject sa proseso. But it is always the rule that government will take steps for the best interests of the child.”
Amanda is the provincial organizer of peasant women group AMIHAN in Cagayan, but was branded by police and military as a financier of the New People’s Army.
