Roque thinks passing a bill to limit military entry in UP ‘reasonable’
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque is finally showing more support to his alma mater after throwing a tantrum on national television.
The former law professor now Malacañang spokesman said he was in favor of proposals from fellow UP alumni turned senators who are now seeking the passage of a law that would make permanent the contents of the accord signed by the university with former Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile keeping military and police presence out of its campuses.
“We always respect the prerogative of our legislators to legislate national policies,” Roque said in a Thursday briefing. “Sa akin po, that seems to be a reasonable proposal but that has to be enacted into law.”
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana decided to unilaterally scrap the deal, saying it was dated as state forces now have to enter campus grounds to stop the supposed recruitment of students into the New People’s Army –– at a time when all classes are done online.
