Roque tells ICC to stop pursuing PH human rights probe: Sayang effort!

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made a renewed appeal to the International Criminal Court to drop its long-delayed investigation into human rights abuses in the Philippines following a Supreme Court ruling that upheld the country’s withdrawal from the group.

Roque saw the recent court decision that dismissed a petition questioning President Rodrigo Duterte’s authority to unilaterally decide to pull out from the Rome Statute and get out of the ICC’s helm without seeking the concurrence of the Senate.

“The latest High Court ruling, which is decided on mootness, acknowledges that the President is indeed the chief architect of this country’s foreign policy,” the abogado said in a statement.

“Having said this, we call on the ICC not to waste time and resources on investigations that will not prosper as we do not recognize ICC jurisdiction over the Philippines, as well as in the face of uncontroverted proof that domestic legal and judicial processes are functioning normally in our country,” he added.
