Roque cites opposition lawyers De Lima, Macalintal on possible VP immunity
Harry Roque is now siding with opposition abogados when convenient for President Rodrigo Duterte.
Despite long dismissing their statements and legal opinions that criticize the Duterte administration, the Malacañang spokesman now turned to the wisdom of detained Senator Leila De Lima and election lawyer Romy Macalintal to beef up Duterte’s claim that a vice president enjoys immunity from suit.
“Magugulat po kayo na ang nagsabi na mayroong immunity ang vice president ay walang iba kung hindi ang number one kritiko ng ating Presidente, si dating Justice Secretary Leila De Lima,” Roque said in his Wednesday briefing, sharing that a vice president may undergo criminal proceedings but they cannot be removed from their post by any court.
“So ang paninindigan po ni Leila de Lima, binago pa nga niya ang posisyon po niya, ay mayroon daw immunity ang vice president,” he said. “Ganoon din po ang opinyon ng election lawyer na si Romulo Macalintal na kung maalaala ninyo ay tumakbo sa partido ng dilawan, at lumabas po ito sa Philippine Star noong October 15, 2014. Sabi po niya, iyong dating Vice President Binay, just like the president and all constitutional officials, is covered by immunity from suit. Meaning, he cannot be charged in court under the normal procedure of trial.”
