Leyte Rep. and former Speaker Martin Romualdez is ready to face the plunder case filed against him and asks for no special treatment, only due process, according to his lawyer Ade Fajardo.
The Office of the Ombudsman filed a P7.4 billion plunder case against Romualdez, former lawmaker Elizaldy Co, and two others over their alleged receipt of commissions or kickbacks from contractors, persons, and entities with interest in flood control, infrastructure and other government projects.

Fajardo said Romualdez respects the courts and the legal process and will face the allegations in accordance with the law.

“Representative Romualdez asks for no special treatment. He only asks for the same due process and fair hearing guaranteed to every Filipino,” Fajardo said.

He also acknowledged the public interest in this case and said that it should be decided based on actual evidence.

“But ultimately, criminal liability must be determined by the evidence presented in court, under the rules and safeguards of our justice system,” he said.

Plunder is a non-bailable offense.

Romualdez, the President’s cousin, has denied receiving kickbacks in relation to the flood control corruption controversy.
