Former Speaker Martin Romualdez was brought to the Quezon City Jail on Monday evening in accordance with the Sandiganbayan order, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology confirmed.
In a statement, the BJMP said Romualdez was placed in the infirmary.
“Considering his medical needs and the medical recommendations presented before the Court, Rep. Romualdez has been placed in the jail infirmary together with other PDL requiring medical monitoring,” it said.
It said this arrangement was in line with BJMP policies and the court order to ensure that his medical needs are met.
“The BJMP assures the public that it will remain professional, impartial, and consistent in the implementation of its rules and regulations. All PDL under its custody are treated fairly and humanely, without distinction or privilege based on status and position,” it said.
Romualdez, the incumbent Leyte representative and the President’s cousin, is detained over his P7.4 billion plunder case tied to alleged kickbacks from flood control and infrastructure projects.
He was charged along with former lawmaker Elizaldy Co, Romualdez’s personal aide Joselyn Serenio, and businessman Felicito Guevarra.
He was initially confined at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center and moved to the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital for assessment.
The UP-PGH doctors said he is stable and does not need continued hospital stay.
It also said he requires continued medical care out of the hospital, including regular blood pressure monitoring.
