Robredo blasts Duterte strategy on VFA: ‘Parang extortion’
Vice President Leni Robredo criticized the Duterte government’s new strategy to bargain with the United States regarding the fate of the Visiting Forces Agreement.
She found it problematic when Duterte told the US: “If you want VFA, pay for it.”
Robredo’s response: “Parang extortion lang… Parang ano eh, parang kriminal eh. ‘Kung gusto mo nito, magbayad ka muna,'” the abogado VP said.
Duterte last year called off the VFA after the United States revoked his ally Senator Bato Dela Rosa’s visa over allegations of human rights violations. Now, he seems to be getting even –– although he backtracked and said the military defense deal stays on for now.
“Para sa akin, iyong pagkakaibigan natin with the US many generations ago, mayroon tayong shared history na hindi naman ganiyan iyong pag-treat ng ating mga partners,” Robredo said.
“Nakakahiya na… parang nag-eextort tayo,” she added. “So sa akin, Ka Ely, kapag sinabi nating ayaw nating i-renew iyong VFA, ilatag natin kung bakit. Ipakita natin bakit hindi siya nakakabuti sa atin. Hindi iyong pera iyong consideration.”
She added that it seems distasteful to demand money from a country we consider a friend and ally.
