The National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) shared the handwritten letters of political prisoners wishing this year’s Bar takers the best of luck and urged them to fight for justice and for the marginalized when they become lawyers.
In their letter, the political prisoners of the Correctional Institution for Women reminded future lawyers that their duty is not just to stand before the court to defend their client.
“Being a lawyer is to serve and defend the oppressed and exploited people,” they said.
The political prisoners in Camp Bagong Diwa, in their own letter, said there is a need for lawyers for the poor and the marginalized amid widespread injustice.
Activist Alex Pacalda, who was convicted of illegal possession of firearms, said that amid the uncertainty about their cases, political prisoners continue to hold on because of brave lawyers, paralegals, and advocates.
Pacalda said the political prisoners in detention need the bravery of the future peoples’ lawyers.
In its own message, the NUPL reminded the Bar takers that the people are cheering them on to become defenders of their rights, freedom, and future.
“When the fatigue sets in, keep your vision fixed on the future clients who will need your courage. Let these letters from our brave clients help you find the strength to push through until the end of this path of integrity,” it said.
“The legal profession—and the people—are waiting for you,” it added.
