Peralta told to release list of prisoners freed during pandemic

A human rights group challenged Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta to publish the list of supposed 120,000 detainees freed by virtue of compassion amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kapatid said the Supreme Court should be transparent about its decision to set free inmates with a high risk of contracting COVID-19, while other vulnerable ones were sent behind bars also in the middle of lockdowns. Two newborn babies have died in less than a year after their activist mothers were sent to jail.

“If the Chief Justice wants to prove that the Supreme Court was able to respond well to the challenges brought by the pandemic, including the decongestion of jails, he should reveal who were released, not just provide mere digits as no one should forget the attempted inclusion of murder and rape convict Mayor Antonio Sanchez and plunder convict Janet Lim Napoles in a list of inmates eligible for early release under the good conduct time allowance (GCTA) law until this was uncovered and both were disqualified,” Kapatid spokesperson Fides Lim said in a statement.

Their question: who were those released when many other political prisoners that they believe deserved to be freed over trumped-up charges were bypassed?

“We also cannot forget how the Supreme Court took five months on the urgent petition filed by political prisoners for the humanitarian release of those at risk from contracting the contagious disease only to remand it to the trial courts,” she added.
