After having lost to retired Chief Justice Teresita Leonardo De Castro, Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Diosdado Peralta is taking another crack for the position as the country’s top magistrate.
“Justice Peralta next candidate for CJ after J. Bersamin,” Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra disclosed.
Following SC Associate Justice Lucas Bersamin, Guevarra said Peralta has also accepted his automatic nomination and submitted his papers on Wednesday (Oct. 10).
By tradition, senior magistrates of the SC are automatically nominated for the post of chief justice but will have to accept the automatic nomination before being named as candidate.
The JBC opened up the application for the chief justice post last Oct. 1 and is set to close it this Oct. 15.
Following the removal of ousted chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, Peralta and Bersamin were among those who got selected in the shortlist for the post.
However, President Rodrigo Duterte picked for the post retired Chief Justice Teresita Leonardo-De Castro who hung up her robe last Oct. 10.
