The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) on Wednesday declared the Senate “damaged goods” and called the Supreme Court the Filipino people’s “last hope” following the upper chamber’s move to lower the voting threshold for conviction in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

In a statement released through its national spokesperson Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, PDP-Laban accused the Senate majority of abandoning its constitutional duties and giving in to political interests.

“Today, the ugly forces of dictatorship have overrun the first line of defense of the Constitution,” the party said.

“Political expediency and the law of force, rather than the force of law, have prevailed,” it added.

PDP-Laban said the Senate majority had “abandoned the bounden duties imposed by their oaths” and succumbed to “political convenience and personal interests.”

The party urged Filipinos to publicly and lawfully express their opposition and defend democratic institutions.

“At this point, the last hope of the Filipino people will be the Supreme Court,” PDP-Laban said by citing the tribunal’s role in protecting the Constitution against alleged political manipulation.

“The Senate is now damaged goods,” the party declared.

PDP-Laban called on the public to “rush to repair and protect our institutions” by exercising the sovereignty granted under the Constitution.#
