PDP-Laban lawyer Melvin Matibag kicked out of Senate hearing. Here’s why

PDP-Laban Cusi faction stalwart Atty. Melvin Matibag was kicked out of a Senate hearing on Thursday (Oct. 21) after he accused that the budget deliberations on the Department of Energy’s 2022 budget became political.

Matibag, who is also the head of the government’s National Transmission Corporation, received a dressing down from Senator Win Gatchalian after he accused that the hearing is being used by rival faction Sen. Manny Pacquiao to take the Cusi wing down.

“Let’s call a spade a spade dito sa hearing na ito eh – this is all political, Sen. Pacquiao,” Matibag said.

But Gatchalian was pissed off: “This is my committee and you have no right of calling this hearing a political hearing. This is a budget hearing.”

Matibag even tried to cut him off but the senator continued.

“The senators are entitled to ask policy questions… You’re out of order. You’re no longer recognized. We’ve given you a chance to answer policy questions but instead, you insulted this committee,” Gatchalian added. “Hindi naman fair ‘yun.”

Matibag was then booted out of the online meeting room for being disrespectful, with Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi apologizing for his snarky behavior.
