Para walang lokohan: Rufus Rodriguez to file bills removing candidate substitution
Deputy Speaker Rufus Rodriguez will be formalizing the clamor to remove the option for political parties to substitute their candidates during every election, saying this would let Pinoys and politikos to take the process seriously.
“One reform I am proposing is an almost absolute ban on substitution of candidates by political parties,” he said in a statement, adding that only death should be the acceptable basis for substitutions.
“It is lamentable that for the May 2022 elections, certain candidates for the presidency are perceived to be proxies for some personalities, even if they can be considered as serious aspirants,” the abogado added, noting that this strips off the “integrity” of the polls.
Instead, he proposed to extend the deadline for filing of candidacies to a later date to give parties and aspiring bets more time to think about their political moves thoroughly. To make sure they are serious, Rodriguez also wants all incumbents – including elected officials – to be forced to resign for their upcoming candidacy as well.
“It would prevent them from using their offices, public funds and their influence to promote their candidacies,” he added.
