Pangilinan says no discussion yet on verdict date for VP Sara’s impeachment trial

Sen. Francis Pangilinan said senators have yet to discuss when they would hand down the verdict in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, adding that the possible December ruling stated by the court’s spokesperson Regie Tongol is his own opinion.

Pangilinan said Tongol cannot issue his personal opinions on the court’s behalf.

Pangilinan said he is making the statement when sought for comment about Tongol’s pronouncement that the court is confident that the trial would be completed before the Senate goes on recess for the holidays.

Tongol said there could be a final verdict by December 16.

But Pangilinan said there has been no discussion, formal or otherwise, about the trial’s timetable and verdict.

“This verdict date is merely the opinion of the spokesperson. As Senator Judge, I do not share the opinion of the spokesperson. He has no authority to issue his personal opinions on the Court’s behalf,” he said.

The prosecution is presenting evidence on Duterte’s alleged unexplained wealth, the third of four articles of impeachment against her.
