Palace bullish that proposed tax reforms can help reduce PH debt

Malacañang on Monday expressed optimism that the government’s proposed tax reforms and long-term debt repayment scheme would help manage the Philippines’ growing debt.

“Ang lahat ng ginagawa ngayon ng mga reporma sa tax ay maaaring makatulong at makapag-manage ng ating public debt,” said Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace press officer Claire Castro.

In a press briefing, she said lower income tax rates for workers and small business would enable them to have more disposable income.

This could lead to a ripple effect throughout the economy, generating higher revenues for the government as well.

Other proposals are higher excise taxes on distilled spirits e-cigarettes, vape devices, novel tobacco products, plastic products, and vehicles.

Castro added that most of the government’s debts have long-term repayment plans, and that current government revenues are enough to repay these.

“Sapat po sa kasalukuyan ang revenues o kita ng gobyerno para matugunan ang obligasyon natin sa utang sa tamang panahon,” stressed.
