Malacañang on Friday pushed for a balanced approach to proposals to have social media platforms secure a legislative franchise before operating in the country.

Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace press officer Claire Castro said this needs thorough study, especially that social media is also by businesses, government agencies, and other sectors and not just young Filipinos.

“Dapat aralin, dapat balanse dahil hindi naman natin puwedeng matanggalan din ng karapatan ng ibang mga kababayan natin dahil sa mga nangyayari sa ating mga kabataan,” Castro said in a press briefing in Ilocos Norte.

She said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is amenable to measures to limit young people’s exposure to harmful online content.

However, Marcos also wants a “win-win” solution for users and social media platforms.

Castro pressed for a whole-of-nation approach to address violent incidents in schools as she urged social media platforms to cooperate with the government in addressing the misuse of their services.

“Kailangan din po kayong magbigay ng inyong pangako at kung papaano ninyo rin po matutulungan ang bawat gobyerno, hindi lang ang Pilipinas, bawat bansa kung paano ninyo masusolusyunan ang mga ganitong klaseng problema. Hindi dapat puro kita lang, kailangan din ay may puso,” she added.
