Our efforts ain’t useless: Guevarra rebuffs Erice over Trillanes cases
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Tuesday defended the government’s move to pursue the coup d’etat and rebellion cases lodged against opposition Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV.
Guevarra pointed out that this will send a clear message to anyone or groups who would want to seize power through dubious and unconstitutional means.
“With all due respect, pursuing one to answer for the crime of rebellion or coup d’ etat is not a useless exercise, as it sends a warning signal to all similarly minded persons who have dubious plans of endangering the security of the republic,” Guevarra said.
The DoJ chief issued the statement in response to Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice’s pronouncement that the government should let go of the charges against Trillanes in light of the Makati City regional trial court’s ruling denying the Justice Department’s motion for the issuance of an arrest order against Trillanes.
According to Erice, pursuing these cases against the opposition senator was just a waste of time and government resources.
