President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday called on Filipinos to remain committed to protect democracy, freedom, and unity as the country observed Ninoy Aquino Day.
The national holiday marked the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of the former senator upon his return to the Philippines in 1983, which eventually sparked the EDSA People Power Revolution against ex-President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
Aquino is a fierce critic of Marcos Sr., the father of the President.
Malacañang earlier declared August 21, 2026 as a special non-working day.
In a message, the Chief Executive said Aquino’s memory is a reminder for Filipinos to stand for their convictions and principles.
“Ninoy Aquino Day, therefore, invites us to acknowledge the past and draw from it the resolve needed to safeguard freedom, strengthen our institutions, and deepen national unity,” the President said.
Marcos said the country is facing challenges such as disinformation, division, distrust, and civic indifference.
He added: “The challenges facing our democracy may have changed over time, but our shared responsibility to reinforce it remains.”
He said Aquino’s legacy urges Filipinos to address these with vigilance and faith.
“This administration will remain steadfast in protecting our sovereignty, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring that the liberty we cherish is matched by real opportunities for every Filipino,” the President said.
He added: “Together, let us carry forward the lessons of our history as we continue to nurture a more peaceful and prosperous Bagong Pilipinas.”
