Ombudsman: 107 lifestyle checks underway, list is growing

Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said his office currently has 107 lifestyle checks underway, and more names are expected to be added to the list.

Remulla said the list would grow because the Office of the Ombudsman is actively pursuing information on people in the government agencies that generate revenue.

These include the Bureau of Customs, the Land Transportation Office, and the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Remulla said during his office’s budget hearing in the House of Representatives.

“This is where most of the lifestyle schemes happen,” he added.

Earlier, Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano said the office has ordered lifestyle checks on 26 members of the House of Representatives suspected of being “cong-tractors,” or owners of contracting firms that deal directly with the government.

Akbayan Rep. Chel Diokno, who asked Remulla for an update on the lifestyle checks, said he was glad that the checks are being undertaken.

Diokno said that had such activities been done earlier, they would have exposed the questionable activities of government officials.
