No impeachment trial on Wednesday for ‘strategic procedural pause’

The Impeachment Court canceled its session on September 30, Wednesday, for a “strategic procedural pause” in Vice President Sara Duterte’s trial, according to spokesperson Regie Tongol.

The hearing will resume Thursday, October 1.

In a statement, Tongol said the pause is intended to clear the floor to allow both sides to prepare for the whole-day marathon sessions from October 1 to 15.

“The Impeachment Court is not pausing because it is behind; it is pausing because the court is aggressively ahead of schedule,” he said.

The proceedings have been advancing at a “rigorous pace,” he added.

He said the one-day pause will give the prosecution and the defense breathing room to assess the highly technical and voluminous financial records from the Anti-Money Laundering Council and Register of Deeds.

The prosecution is presenting evidence on allegations of unexplained wealth.
