No alarm bells over Cayetanos’ overseas trip, says Ombudsman

Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla sees nothing to worry about with the departure of Senators Pia and Alan Peter Cayetano and Alan’s wife Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano from the Philippines amid ongoing investigations.

Remulla said they “probably need a break.”

“I know that they have been under stress lately, as what Sen. [Panfilo] Lacson said, and I would follow the words of Sen. Lacson,” Remulla said in a press briefing.

Lacson has disclosed alleged flood control irregularities and reclamation activities in Taguig, the Cayetanos’ bailiwick, that he had asked the Office of the Ombudsman to investigate.

Remulla said he does not think the Cayetanos would follow the example of Sen. Loren Legarda and her son, Batangas Rep. Leandro Leviste.

He believes the Cayetanos would return to the country and added that he thinks they would not abandon their government offices.

Legarda flew to France and has repeatedly extended her medical leave, while Leviste is on a two-month leave.

Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said the Cayetano siblings were on a personal trip for health reasons.

The Ombudsman flagged their extended stay abroad as suspicious.
