Newly-appointed Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel H. Gaerlan took his oath before Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta at the SC en banc session hall in Manila.

Witnessing the oath-taking were Gaerlan’s wife, Ma. Nenette, and their sons. His appointment completed the high court’s 15-member roster.

He will mandatorily retire on his 70th birthday on December 19, 2028.

President Duterte on Wednesday appointed Gaerlan, a former Court of Appeals Associate Justice, to the SC.

Gaerlan will take the associate justice seat of Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta, his appointment letter showed.

Gaerlan was a graduate of San Beda College of Law and a professor at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

He was a former Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) lawyer before he entered the judiciary as a trial court judge.

The JBC is the constitutionally-mandated body to screen and vet nominees to key positions in the judiciary and the Office of the Ombudsman.

President Duterte appointed Peralta as the 26th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Peralta will be sitting as the chief magistrate until he mandatorily retires at the age of 70 on March 27, 2022.
