NBI willing to probe murders of Davao-based lawyer, husband
The National Bureau of Investigation will be on stand-by in case the Philippine National Police needs assistance in investigating the murders of a Davao-based lawyer and her husband recently.
“We will let the police lead the investigation for now. The NBI will be on stand-by to provide any assistance needed. If there is any semblance of political color to the killing, or connection with any kind of advocacy, we will get the AO 35 mechanism moving, ” Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said on Tuesday.
The AO 35 task force is a special unit of the DOJ that conducts an investigation into politically-motivated killings or extrajudicial killings of members of civil society groups, political movements, people’s and non-government organizations, among others.
Unidentified assailaints have shot dead a Davao City-based lawyer and her husband just outside their residence in Barangay Talomo last Wednesday.
Police identified the victims as Atty. Sitti Gilda Mahinay-Sappie and her husband, Muhaimen Mohammad Sapie, hosts of online-based radio program “Justice Redeemer. ”
Initial investigation showed that the victims were gunned down shortly after they stepped out of their house at 5:10pm Wednesday.
The two died while undergoing treatment at the Southern Philippines Medical Center.
Justice Redeemer is an online free legal advice program, tackling “general legal issues” and an opinion-oriented political program, which is also aired over 94.7 Power Radio Davao (DXLL).
Mahinay was arrested in 2019 for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. She was released on bail.
The lawyer alleged that she was being harassed for defending the rights of farmers and marginalized.
