The NBI Retirees and Ex-Employees Association (REXEAI) has taken exception to Batangas Rep. Leandro Legarda Leviste’s recent statement calling the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) the “National Bureau of Imbento.”
In a statement signed by REXEAI president Atty. Ricardo “Ric” Diaz, the group expressed disappointment over Leviste’s statement, saying it showed disregard for the integrity of the NBI and the people who have dedicated their careers to the agency.
“While we understand that humor can sometimes serve as a means of coping with serious matters, your choice of words does not amuse us,” the group said in a statement addressed to Leviste.
REXEAI said lawmakers, in particular, should use their positions responsibly and show respect for legal processes.
“Your statements should embody the respect and seriousness that legal processes demand,” the group said.
It said calling the NBI the “National Bureau of Imbento” trivialized the agency’s work and insulted its current and former personnel who served in law enforcement.
The retirees’ group also stressed that the NBI plays an important role in law enforcement and deals with serious cases affecting the country.
“It is imperative that we, as a nation, support and respect our law enforcement agencies, especially during challenging times,” it said.
REXEAI further warned that statements dismissing the NBI could undermine public confidence in the agency, particularly as law enforcement institutions face scrutiny over their integrity and credibility.
“Dismissive comments only serve to weaken their position and effectiveness,” the group said.
The organization urged Leviste to reconsider his approach and to speak about legal processes with the seriousness and respect expected from a lawmaker.
It also called on the Batangas congressman to reflect on the impact of his remarks on the reputation of the NBI and its personnel.
REXEAI represents retired and former employees of the NBI.#
