NBI files disbarment cases vs lawyers over alleged Recto honey trap plot

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Friday filed disbarment complaints before the Supreme Court against several lawyers over their alleged involvement in a plot to frame Executive Secretary Ralph Recto.

AbogadoPh is withholding the lawyers’ names and details of the complaints as disciplinary proceedings against members of the Bar are confidential.

The SC recently reminded lawyers and the public that such proceedings must remain confidential until the Court issues a final order.

“The Supreme Court reminds the public, especially members of the legal profession, that disciplinary proceedings against lawyers are confidential and must remain so until the Court issues its final order,” the Office of the Spokesperson said.

The SC cited Canon VI, Section 1 of the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability, which states that disciplinary proceedings against lawyers “shall be confidential in character and summary in nature.”

Only the Court’s final order or decision may be published like its other decisions.

The SC also warned that unauthorized disclosure or dissemination of information about disciplinary proceedings may violate the CPRA and result in sanctions, including contempt of court.#
