Matibag: Meta to assist PH authorities go after libelous, fake-news accounts, troll farms

National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Melvin Matibag revealed over the weekend that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, will assist Philippine authorities track down social media accounts used to post libelous content, spread fake news and operate troll farms.

Matibag made the statement following his return from Singapore, where he and other government officials met with representatives of Meta.

“Yang mga accounts na yan, even yung mga naninirang mga accounts, yung mga libelous ang mga pinoposts, mga fake news, pati na din ang mga trolls farms, ay tutulungan tayo (ng Meta) para habulin ang mga ito,” Matibag said.

The Philippine delegation included Matibag, Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda, Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center Executive Director Aboy Paraiso, and representatives from the House of Representatives, Senate, Department of Education, National Telecommunications Commission and National Privacy Commission.#

Matiba issued a warning to individuals who use cyberspace to commit wrongdoing, saying authorities would continue monitoring online activities.

“Ang message dito, hindi na puwede magtago yung mga gumagawa ng kalokohan sa cyberspace. Hindi na puwede magtago,” Matibag said.#
