President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has tasked government agencies and local officials to observe disaster preparedness and enforce laws on “no build zones” amid floods caused by heavy rainfall from the southwest monsoon in recent days.

Marcos issued the orders during a meeting with key Cabinet officials on the floods in Metro Manila and Central Luzon on Monday, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace press officer Claire Castro said in a press briefing.

During the meeting,, Marcos urged the stricter enforcement of laws, especially restriction on construction in flood-prone places.

Castro said the President underscored the master plans for Metro Manila and Cebu dating back to 1941 and 1936 that were not fully implemented.

She said these plans would have ensured that some remained open spaces that could take in excess rainwater, hence reducing floods.

“Dapat ipatupad ang batas pati ang ‘no build zone’. Huwag nang mamulitika, ipatupad ang batas,” she said.

Marcos also wants climate change preparedness incorporated into education and at the community level.

During the meeting, the Department of Budget and Management assured that funding is available through the Quick Response Fund for disaster-related needs.

“Ang utos ni Pangulong Marcos Jr., huwag tayong magpakampante,” she said.
