Marcos wants ban on political dynasties passed during his term – Palace

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wants the proposed ban on political dynasties to be passed into law before he steps down in 2028, Malacañang said on Tuesday.

“Alam nating lahat na nais ng Pangulo na sa kanya ring pamumuno magkaroon ng batas patungkol sa anti-dynasty bill or anti-political dynasty bill. So, priority po ‘yan ng Pangulo,” Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace press officer Claire Castro said in a press briefing.

She said the anti-political dynasty law is meant to give more Filipinos the chance to run for elective posts.

“Pero kung ikokonekta po natin ito sa mga liderato ngayon, sa Pampanga, sa Bulacan, hindi na po ito necessary sa ngayon,” she said.

“Kailangan po na magkaroon tayo ng batas para mas magkaroon ng tsansa ang ibang mga kababayan natin na maging leader at maipakita naman din nila ang kanilang kagalingan,” Castro added.

The 1987 Constitution ordered Congress to prohibit political dynasties “as may be defined by law.”

However, there is no enabling legislation for such a ban.

The proposed Anti-Political Dynasty Act is among the priority measures that should be acted on by the 20th Congress.
