President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered government agencies to give greater attention to climate change issues and impact as it is no longer a distant environmental issue but a reality that millions of Filipinos face.

Malacañang made the remarks on Tuesday amid concerns that some government offices allegedly failed to heed the recommendations of the Climate Change Commission.

Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace press officer Claire Castro said the President wants the public to have a better understanding of the risks and repercussion of climate change, including the increasing volume of rainfall and floods.

“Hindi na po mangyayari iyan dahil pagtutuunan po ng pansin ang isyu patungkol sa climate change,” she said.

Marcos issued the order amid the widespread floods in Metro Manila and Central Luzon due to several days of heavy rainfall due to the enhanced southwest monsoon.

The CCC allegedly expressed concern that some government offices were not responsive to its recommendations.

Castro said she would get in touch with the CC to identify which additional measures should be raised to Marcos.

“Hindi na po ito parang subject sa ating Science na pinag-uusapan lamang dahil nandito na po. Realidad na po ito,” she added.
