President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday called for improvements in protections for Filipino seafarers amid technological changes and geopolitical risks that also affect the maritime industry.

He made the call at the Philippine Maritime Convention 2026 at the Manila Hotel.

“The way we prepare and protect our seafarers must evolve with the world they sail in,” Marcos said, adding that the maritime sector is undergoing changes due to technology.

He noted that seafarers are also exposed to risks due to armed conflict and geopolitical tensions that they have no part in, with some getting injured or killed.

“In moments like this, we are reminded that no maritime industry can truly be sustainable if the people who keep it moving are left vulnerable,” the President said.

He assured that the government is boosting its measures for seafarer protection and support, as well as compliance with the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers Convention and Code.

“Let us ensure that every Filipino that sails under the Philippine flag, or represents the Philippines aboard an international vessel, carries the confidence that their country stands behind them,” he added.
