Marcos phone call with European Commission leader marks conclusion of negotiations for PH-EU FTA

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a phone call to mark the substantial conclusion of negotiations for the Philippines-European Union Free Trade Agreement.

Both leaders agreed that the FTA is a testament to the strong partnership between the Philippines and the EU and their commitment to a rules-based order that promotes open and fair trade that is mutually beneficial.

Marcos also posted about his conversation with the foreign leader on his social media accounts.

“This is an important milestone in our strong partnership with the European Union and our shared commitment to open and fair trade. The agreement will bring more opportunities for business and investment, create more jobs and support stronger and more diversified supply chains,” the President said on Tuesday evening.

“We will work to ensure that these opportunities reach our Filipino farmers, manufacturers, consumers and MSMEs, while opening new possibilities for the Philippines in AI, digital technologies and other important sectors,” he added, as he expressed optimism over the formal conclusion and eventual signing of the FTA.

For her part, von der Leyen stressed the importance for the EU of having stable and predictable trade partners such as the Philippines.

Negotiations for the FTA were relaunched in 2023 during President von der Leyen’s visit to Manila.
