President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday graced the groundbreaking of the Metro Manila Subway station at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay City, saying it is progress that reflects the cooperation of the government and the private sector.
The NAIA Terminal 3 subway station project – which is under the Metro Manila Subway Project’s Contract Package 109 – will include the underpinning of existing NAIA expressway piers.
“Building a subway beneath a dense and highly developed city is no simple undertaking. That is why CP109 will also introduce advanced engineering methods to the Philippines,” Marcos said.
The President said its tunnels will require the underpinning of existing expressway piers.
This is the first application of this type of technology for tunnel construction in the country.
“Proven in Japan, this method will help ensure that construction can proceed safely beneath existing infrastructure while also maintaining structural integrity,” he added.
The right-of-way for the terminal link has been secured as well. The President said this will allow the construction of the subway project’s NAIA Terminal 3 station to “move forward with greater certainty.”
“The NAIA Terminal 3 Station will also provide passengers with a direct rail connection to the busiest airport terminals in the country. This progress reflects the cooperation of government, the private sector, and all our other development partners,” Marcos said.
The subway station will be at the NAIA Terminal 3 open parking lot. It will be connected to the NAIA Terminal 3 Building.
The contract covers the construction of an underground station and tunnels within the NAIA Terminal 3 Complex.
It covers 2.413 kilometers connecting Taguig City and Pasay City and will serve around 70,000 passengers every day by 2035.
“Our people need a public transport system that gives them a real alternative, one that is efficient, dependable, and connected to the places where we live, study, work, and travel. Our investors and tourists need to know that they can rely upon a transport system that can bring them to where they need to be and want to be in the most efficient manner that is possible,”the President said.
He added that the project, along with the North-South Commuter Railway, the Metro Rail Transit Line 7, and the Common Station “form part of our broader effort to improve mobility and connectivity.”
