Manhid na, makapal pa mukha! Jejomar Binay: Alan Cayetano’s foiled bid to ‘reward’ allies with P10B ‘unforgivable’

Former Vice President Jejomar Binay lambasted House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano over his aborted plan to place P10 billion for the tourism sector’s recovery in a government agency where the money could end up as pork barrel funds.

While the P10-billion fund under the proposed Bayanihan to Recover as One Act was eventually distributed across a number of government agencies, Binay said Cayetano’s bid to “reward” his allies “smacks of insensitivity to the ordeal of millions of Filipinos.”

“At a time when the national leadership keeps insisting that the government is running out of funds, this display of hubris on the part of the speaker is unforgivable,” the former Vice President said in his August 25 column for the Manila Bulletin.

Abogado’s sister site, Politiko, earlier reported that Cayetano pushed for the placement of P10-billion tourism recovery fund in the Bayanihan 2 under the Tourism Infrastructure an Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) as “pabaon” or parting gift for his allies.

By seeking to buy his allies’ loyalty, Binay said Cayetano is “clearly ignoring” the national government’s appeal for everyone to work together to address the pandemic.

“He is either not listening to the national leadership, or he treats such statements with indifference, putting his personal and political interests ahead of the nation’s,” Binay said of the Speaker.
