Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra may well be on his way to landing the dream job of any abogado: being a Supreme Court justice.

A source told Abogado that Guevarra is being eyed as one of President Rodrigo Duterte’s future appointments to the Supreme Court.

Duterte, however, reporotedly has a bigger plan for Guevarra: To become Chief Justice.

Based on the shortlist of candidates for Chief Justice that the Judicial and Bar Council submitted to Duterte, there’s a chance that Guevarra will land the top post in the Supreme Court before the administration ends on June 2022.

The current frontrunners for Chief Justice, Supreme Court Associate Justices Diosdado Peralta and Estela Perlas Bernabe, will be retiring on March 2022 and May 2022, respectively. Duterte can still appoint Guevarra to head the judiciary since the election ban does not apply to the position of Chief Justice.

However, Guevarra could be Chief Justice much sooner if Duterte decides to appoint Supreme Court Associate Justice Andres Reyes Jr., who will retire in March next year.

The number of vacancies in the Supreme Court bench is set to rise to three on October 26 with the impending retirement of Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio. Duterte has yet to name the abogados who will replace the posts vacated by retired Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin and Associate Justice Francis Jardeleza.

With his stellar performance as head of the Justice Department, Guevarra is reportedly a shoo-in for a Supreme Court appointment.

Will he or won’t he be one of Padre Faura’s gods? The decision lies in Duterte’s hands.
