Man gets 19 years for pimping underage sister, cousin

The Iligan City Regional Trial Court (RTC) has sentenced a man to 19 to 21 years in prison for sexually exploiting his underage sister and cousin, as well as another minor.

The court’s Branch 2 accepted the plea bargain of the unnamed man who was convicted of the lesser offense of attempted trafficking under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act. He was also found guilty of violations of the Anti-Child Abuse Law and the Anti-Child Pornography Act.

The man was ordered to pay a fine of ₱500,000, as well as civil liabilities amounting to ₱50,000 for each of the three complainants.

Meanwhile, his female accomplice was sentenced to a total of eight years and four months to 12 years and two months in prison for the same charges. She was also ordered to pay a fine of ₱100,000, as well as restitution of ₱50,000 for each of the three complainants.

This development was disclosed by the International Justice Mission (IJM), a watchdog against the online sexual exploitation of children.

“We hope that this poses a strong deterrence for criminals from committing this kind of violence against children. Deterrence to criminals means protection of more children from violence,” IJM-Cebu program office director Lucille Dejito said in a statement.

Regional Prosecutor Merlynn Uy, head of the Department of Justice (DoJ) Anti-Trafficking Task Force for the Northern Mindanao region, added that the verdict “highlights our continuing efforts against online sexual exploitation of children in this region to ensure that vulnerable children and women are freed from this form of sexual exploitation and perpetrators are held accountable for such crimes.”
