First Lady Liza Marcos joined the President in officially reopening the newly renovated Coconut Palace, a P200 million project that she oversaw.

The Coconut Palace, also called “Tahanang Pilipino,” was built using coconut and other indigenous materials and was designed by National Artist Francisco “Bobby” Mañosa.

It was completed in 1981 after being commissioned by then First Lady Imelda Marcos, mother of the incumbent President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., so that it could be a guest house for foreign dignitaries.

But Pope John Paul II refused the offer to stay there during his visit to the Philippines in 1981, finding it too opulent amid the poverty in the country.

Malacañang said the newly-renovated Coconut Palace will host official, diplomatic, and cultural engagements, including the 49th ASEAN Leaders’ Summit this November.

It will also showcase the stories, traditions, art, and craftsmanship that reflect the nation’s heritage.

The First Lady earlier said the Coconut Palace will be one of the official venues for the 49th ASEAN Leaders’ Summit.

She called it a “proud showcase of Filipino artistry, culture and the warm hospitality that makes our country so special.”
