Legacy mode: Group wants Peralta to free sick, aging prisoners before leaving SC
Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta has an easy legacy to claim, according to this human rights group.
Kapatid appealed to the outgoing Supreme Court head, who shocked everyone with a notice that he will be stepping down on his 69th birthday in March, to deliver one final act of justice.
The group called on Peralta to sign the Writ of Kalayaan to free prisoners with serious medical conditions to prevent them from a potential coronavirus outbreak inside the country’s jampacked jail cells.
“We only seek justice and we appeal to your sense of compassion and sensitivity to urgently address the subhuman conditions in Philippine jails that have become a systemic problem,” Kapatid said in time for the International Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners.
“Please start the process now. Please do not deny us the opportunity which was forever lost to Reina Mae Nasino when her baby daughter passed away. Life is fleeting,” said one of the petitioners named Fides Lim, whose husband NDFP peace consultant Vicente Ladlad remains behind bars.
