Lawyer Jude Sabio died of cardiac arrest
Sabio’s remains will be cremated today, Wednesday.
Sabio, who was the lawyer of self-confessed Davao Death Squad (DDS) member Edgar Matobato, filed a complaint before the ICC in The Hague, Netherlands, accusing President Rodrigo Duterte and 11 other government officials of crimes against humanity in connection with the war on drugs.
He said Duterte violated the Articles of the Rome Statute through commission of mass murder or extrajudicial executions during his term as Davao City mayor and now President of the Philippines through his aggressive campaign against illegal drugs.
Aside from Duterte, also included in the case were former Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, former Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II, former Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, Senator Richard Gordon, Representative Pantaleon Alvarez, Solicitor General Jose Calida, and former National Bureau of Investigation director Dante Gierran.
However, Sabio withdrew the case and said the ICC case had been used by opposition politicians as a “tool for propaganda” and should therefore be “thrashed and set aside”.
