‘Law should never feel distant’: DOJ Usec Gutierrez honored as ‘Woman of Style and Substance’

Department of Justice Undersecretary Margarita Gutierrez thanked PeopleAsia for recognizing her as one of its “Women of Style and Substance” for 2026 as she underscored her dedication to making sure that the law serves the people.

In a Facebook post, Gutierrez said she was thankful and humbled by this recognition that highlights the work she does in public service.

“I’ve always believed that the law should never feel distant or intimidating. At its heart, it is about people and making sure that someone who needs help knows where to turn, and that justice remains within reach, especially for those who need it most,” Gutierrez said in a Facebook post.

Gutierrez, whose mother is former Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez, said she grew up in a family involved in public service and learned that being a lawyer is not just about knowledge of the law.

She said it is also about “listening, understanding, and serving with compassion.”

Working at the DOJ has allowed her to do this, she said.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to do this work every day at the Department of Justice, and especially through our work at the DOJ Action Center and our outreach efforts across the country,” she said.
