JBC to look for new CJ if Peralta early retirement pushes through
Following Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta’s early retirement next year, the Judicial and Bar Council has to look for nominees for the highest court seat in the country.
Five senior Supreme Court justices are automatically nominated. They are Associate Justices Estela Perlas-Bernabe, Marvic Mario Victor Leonen, Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa, Alexander Gesmundo, and Ramon Paul Hernando.
Perlas-Bernabe is mandatorily retiring on May 14, 2022, while Leonen on December 29, 2032.
Also, Peralta’s retirement resulted in another vacancy in the high court due to early retirement of Associate Justice Priscilla Baltazar-Padilla last November 3.
On Tuesday, SC Public Information Office chief Brian Keith Hosaka confirmed that Peralta has signified intent to retire next year, or during his 69th birthday.
“For those asking about the purported letter of Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta to his colleagues in the Supreme Court, signifying his intention to avail of early retirement, I have asked him personally and he confirmed it. The Chief Justice did not elaborate further but said that he will make a formal announcement in due time, ” Hosaka said in a message.
Earlier, a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, for lack of authority to speak, revealed that Peralta is retiring on March 27, 2021.
According to the source, Peralta, who will retire on 2022 upon reaching the age of 70, made the announcement during en banc session.
He cited no reason.
